IMPORTANT NOTE: Tail of the Dragon...this is something worth mentioning when traveling between Knoxville, TN to Robbinsville, NC. The main road option is on US 129 crossing Deals Gap at the Tennessee/North Carolina line. One stretch of US 129 road beginning in Robbinsville is called "The Tail of the Dragon" and is considered by many as one of the world's best motorcycling and sports car roads. Anyone looking for an exciting highway adventure will enjoy this stretch of US 129 along with it's 318 turns within 11 miles. In consideration for the less adventurous and motion sick folks...you may want to consider an alternate route to Robbinsville or take some Dramamine first....happy trails!
DIRECTIONS FROM ATLANTA:
Use GPS or www.mapquest.com for general directions from your starting location to Atlanta. From I-75 go north past Atlanta for 10-20 minutes to I-575. Take I-575 North/East, it turns into 5/15. Continue past Jasper, GA and past Blue Ridge, GA. When near Mineral Bluff, look for a directional sign that points you left "To Murphy, NC". Turn left on it and go 1-2 miles to get to Spur 60. Turn right on Spur 60 and continue to north carolina where it ends at NC 64/74/129/19. Turn right on NC 64/74/129/19 and continue for about 40 minutes, past Murphy and past Andrews. Notice if your GPS directs you to take Tatham Gap National Forest Service Road...please...don't go that way! It's a narrow winding dirt road that is not the safest way to WMM. Instead, follow the directions below. Near Topton you’ll see a directional sign that points “To Robbinsville” - Turn left (go in front of a gas station/general store on the corner) and you’ll be on NC-129. Follow NC-129 about 20 minutes into Robbinsville. Note: You may have weak signal or lose cell phone service as you go through this portion of the Nantahala Nat’l Forest J When in Robbinsville at the first light you come to - turn left on E. Main Street. Continue to stop sign and turn left on Main Street – that road curves to right onto Junaluska Rd. Follow Junaluska about ½ mile – it curves around and ends at a stop sign. At stop sign turn left on Snowbird Road. Continue on Snowbird about 1 mile to Long Creek Road (a small Whisper Mountain sign is at intersection) Turn left on Long Creek and continue for 2 miles, the large Whisper Mountain sign will be on the right hand side of the road. Follow the road over the bridge up the hill – go toward your left - stop in front of the office if the lights are on.

Use GPS or www.mapquest.com for general directions from your starting location to Robbinsville, NC. Then when in Robbinsville, from US 129 S. - Go to the first stoplight and turn right. Follow NC-143 business to the stop sign (T intersection). Turn left at the stop sign onto Snowbird Rd. Go about 1 mile - Long Creek Rd is on the left (you will see a Whisper Mountain sign at intersection), turn left onto Long Creek. Go for 2 miles, the camp sign is on the right hand side.

Use GPS or www.mapquest.com for general directions from your starting location to Robbinsville, NC. Then when in Robbinsville, from NC-143- Go to the first stoplight and turn left. Go to the next stoplight (1/4 mile) and turn right onto E. Main St. Go to the stop sign and turn left on NC-143 Business (Main St.). Follow NC-143 business to the stop sign (T intersection) and turn left onto Snowbird Rd. Go about 1 mile - Long Creek Rd is on the left (you will see a Whisper Mountain sign at intersection), turn left onto Long Creek. Go for 2 miles, the camp sign is on the right hand side. |
